SAFE DRINKING WATER
In 1990, with the help of the Guernsey Overseas Aid Committee we were able to provide drinking water for Chockenhalli, a tribal village within the reserve forest where they were previously dependant on a forest stream which dried up for 3-4 months in a year and was a considerable distance from their habitation. We renovated an existing open well, built a pumpshed to house a mono block pump and constructed a 26,000 litre tank within the village. This provides enough drinking and household water for the 24 families as well as allowing them to irrigate a small fodder farm and water the 23 crossbreed cows purchased with the help of Womankind Worldwide. The programme was completed despite initial oposition from the forest department who forbade the use of vehicle to transport materials inside the forest. This was overcome when men, women and children agreed to carry the materials for tank, pumpshed, etc, all the way from the checkpost to their village, a distance of 1 kilometre. Since then we've had much greater cooperation from the forest department.
We also proposed to provide drinking water in 2 other villages in the interior of the forest by reinstating 2 borewells which had been dug previously by the forest department using Hill Area Development Project Funds. These were not functioning or available to the people they were intended for. We've purchased 3 submersible pumps , installed with accessories and three phase Electricity connection.
In 1992 we were given a further grant by the Quernsey OAC to provide drinking water for Mavanhalla itself along with a new tribal settlement nearby. We have done this by providing borewell and providing tank and taps, and by piping the same water to the new settlement. The well is now supplying the needs of over 400 families plus 200 resident tribal school children and has proved to the government that borewells are viable here (they previously considered the area unsuitable because it was designated a part of the Niligiri hills).

SAFE DRINKING WATER - SCHOOLS
Before the school children were drinking water direct from water tank due to this there were lot of water bond diseases among children such has cabbies, cholera ,jaundice and stomach problem this led to children dropping out of school and let the family to spend lot of money for treatment in Government and private hospital which was also problem for parents and school teacher so this was discussed in the PTA meeting on regarding the problem cause by drinking water directly from storage tank which was unsafe.
