EYE OPERATIONS
My name Madhi, aged 68 years, I am from Jenu Kurumbha adivasi community which is the most backward among the adivasi community in the region. I am a house wife my husband name is Ramakrishana who is aged 74 and works as a daily labor. I have 2 children by name Saroja and Basuvan. I was blind for 20 years where I always dependent on other family members. I could not do household work or go for work. I was scared to get operated on my eyes since I never visited a hospital till then. MYWA was conducting eye camp regularly in some of the village, in mean time I was identified by MYWA staff and I was counselled to attend the eye camp for a preliminary check-up. There were 273 community members with eye problems like me who never went to hospital. Out of 273, 84 of us were identified and doctors advised for immediate surgery. We were hesitant in the beginning. We were given moral support, counselling and taken to Coimbatore Aravind Eye Hospital for further treatment. We were operated and after the operation we could see and our whole world changed. Now I go for work, I earn, I'm happy that I'm not dependent on my family and also I generate income for the family. I thank MYWA for changing lives of people like me in the region for last 3 decades.

Eye camp are being held in community to identify patients who are having problems in long and short sight vision also other related eye problems. Philomeena was one of the patient who was identified in having problem in long sighted vision. She was referred to Coimbatore Aravind Eye Hospital for surgery. She went through eye surgery and completely recovered and could see again, she was very happy that she got back her sight and thanked the Doctor. The doctor advised her to take rest for 2 days and then she can go home. After 2 days the patients was discharged and had a check up in the hospital, she returned home and was very happy to see her dear ones and community of the village, know she is happy to run around and support her family. She thanks MYWA for providing her to go through the operation and having her vision back.
